Reagan Nelson - birth doula and educator

As far back as I can remember, I have been one to be completely in love with babies. Nothing catches my attention more than talk about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I am constantly in awe of the miracles upon miracles that take place when bringing God’s beloved creation into this world.

As a little girl, I would play with my dolls day after day dreaming of the time I would have a real baby of my own. Well, time went on and that dream became a reality. At the young age of 18 I married my high school sweetheart and we started building our life together. We now have a son, a daughter, and another child on the way. I am incredibly blessed.

When I got pregnant with my son I knew almost right away that the typical hospital birth with countless interventions was, God willing, not for me. I knew all along that it was a life-changing experience and I wanted nothing more than to have complete control and be able to bring him earth side the way that women generations before me did—autonomously and physiologically.

I followed my intuition, started educating myself on all things natural birth, and had an incredibly powerful birth experience. My life was forever changed in one unforgettable moment. I knew right then that I wanted to be a part of helping women experience the same thing. But, in my head, I figured that would be many years down the road when my kids were grown up and out of the house.

Well, a short eight months later and we were excited to find out that our second child was on the way. Without a doubt, I planned to give birth at the same birth center with the same midwife and doula. However, when I was 24 weeks pregnant our family decided to move across the country from central Minnesota to southern Alabama.

So, my search for a birth team and birth location began. I thought it would be easy, but I was mistaken. I was completely shocked at the lack of support for natural childbirth in the area. I reluctantly and hesitantly decided to hire an OB-GYN and plan for a hospital birth. While I was successfully able to have a natural birth, the truth is that having a low intervention birth is not easy in a hospital…especially without the right support.

After my second birth I realized that the whole idea to get into birth work when my children grew older was my timing, not God’s timing. I know now, thanks to the Holy Spirit speaking into me, that it is my calling to support women as they too step into motherhood. I am deeply convicted that it is my responsibility to reflect the Creator and bring Him glory in everything I do, including birth work.

I BELIEVE…

Pregnancy is nothing short of a God-given miracle and we should use this period of time to intentionally prepare for what lies ahead, including birth and postpartum.

God designed and created women to birth. In most cases, women can depend solely on our Creator and the body he has given us to bring His creation into this world without leaning heavily on medical technology.

Every child is a gift from God and should remind us of His goodness. Our immense love for our children doesn’t even compare to Christ’s greater love for His sons and daughters.
